Korean Media States Why SEVENTEEN Has Become An Unrivaled Match In The K-Pop Market
K-Pop idol group SEVENTEEN has achieved a “career high” in their ninth year of debut by surpassing 4.64 million pre-orders for their new album. They have rewritten their own record, proving their unrivaled status in the fierce K-Pop market. Their tenth mini album, FML, has already exceeded four million copies just a day after its release, continuing a new record. Although they have already set a new K-Pop first-week sales record, their final score is expected to be even higher as the initial first-week sales count the album sales for a week after the album’s release.

And it’s not just the album sales that are high. Their second double title track, “Super,” also began to gain popularity by topping major domestic and international music charts after its release. In addition, they have more than doubled album sales compared to their previous album, leading to expectations that they will achieve their first number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
SEVENTEEN’s skyrocketing career is not something that happened in an instant. At the time of their debut in 2015, they started out with 1,400 copies in first-week sales. And after a steady growth over the past eight years, they were able to gain the title of “K-Pop Singer Number One In First-Week Sales.”

According to a Korean media outlet, the reason they were able to record such growth was due to a.) well-made music with their own color and message through self-production led by member Woozi b.) performance that fully utilized the strengths of a 13-member group, c.) content that highlights both the relationship among the members and individually, d.) various individual activities that showcase each person’s capabilities, from entertainment to musicals, etc. However, the most influential among them are the continuous steps they have taken that have made them grow and become stronger.

The media outlet also stated that as for SEVENTEEN’s rapid growth, some people call them the “second BTS” to fulfill BTS’s absence while in the military. Since they belong to the same label as BTS, and there is no other boy group in the current K-Pop market that boasts the level of influence and popularity of BTS, it’s only natural for the public to express their expectations for the next contender.
While, of course, being compared to BTS, who have already ranked among the “top class” groups in the global market, is an honor, it is better to take a different route and become a “first” for something else than to follow the footsteps of their seniors. This will be a way to enrich the market further, and it seems like SEVENTEEN is already on the right track.
