Netizens Compare Chaeyoung’s Recent Apology To Another TWICE Member’s Apology From The Past

TWICE member Chaeyoung recently caused controversy after she was seen wearing clothes with a Nazi swastika and QAnon written on it. The incident drew a lot of criticism from netizens, with many calling out her stylist for not knowing the context of the images on her clothes.

In response to the controversy, Chaeyoung deleted the post with the photos of her wearing the clothes and issued an apology on her Instagram account.

However, how Chaeyoung handled the situation has led many netizens to compare her apology to that of her fellow member Tzuyu from seven years ago. In 2016, Tzuyu was forced to apologize publicly after waving a Taiwanese flag on MBC‘s show My Little Television.

Many netizens are pointing out the fact that Tzuyu had to record a public apology for raising a flag of her origin after the group was given the task of holding up a flag of their country.

The controversy surrounding Tzuyu’s apology in 2016 was particularly sensitive because of the ongoing political tensions between China and Taiwan. At the time, Tzuyu was accused of being a supporter of Taiwanese independence, which is a taboo topic in China. This led to calls for a boycott of TWICE’s activities in China, and Tzuyu, who was 16 years old at the time, was eventually forced to make a public apology.

Some netizens recalled how sad and shocking Tzuyu’s apology was because she did not need to go through all this.

Others compared past apologies, stating how unfair it is for some members to write a written apology while another has to post a video.

chaeyoung wears a symbol of 1 of the biggest genocide in history and gets off with a 6 sentence apology and maybe a slap on the wrist

meanwhile her own coworker had to cry on camera as a teen and apologize to an entire violently nationalist country. what message are you sending? https://t.co/1PdYDqHCzh

Others pointed out that there is no need to compare the two apologies or bring up the past.

Regardless of the comparisons between the two apologies, it is important to remember that both incidents highlight the importance of cultural sensitivity and understanding. In a globalized world, it is important to be aware of the cultural and historical significance of symbols and gestures and to avoid inadvertently promoting hateful ideologies or causing offense.
