TWICE’s Chaeyoung Deletes Instagram Post Of Her Wearing A Shirt With A Swastika After Significant Backlash
TWICE‘s Chaeyoung has deleted a recent Instagram post after receiving significant backlash.
TWICE’s Chaeyoung
Recently, Chaeyoung’s stylist came under fire as Chaeyoung wore an altered version of a QAnon t-shirt for the group’s recent MBC Music Core performance.
Tzuyu uploaded a picture of her with Chaeyoung to her Instagram and fans voiced their frustration with Chaeyoung’s stylist.
Why is Chaeyoung wearing a fucking QANON shirt? I need to speak to the stylist pic.twitter.com/9uKBh4LmzT

Tzuyu has since edited her post to remove the picture.
But only a few days later, Chaeyoung uploaded an Instagram post of her own. Which shared shots of her time in the U.S.

But although most of the post was innocuous, a few shots of Chaeyoung wearing a controversial t-shirt had fans instantly asking the idol to delete her post.

The t-shirt, which can be clearly seen in one of Chaeyoung’s pictures, features a swastika, which was taken and used as an anti-Semitic symbol, most commonly associated with Nazis and contemporary white supremacist movements.

The shirt Chaeyoung was spotted wearing features a famous image of the Sex Pistols member Sid Vicious, a punk icon who gained popularity in the 1970s. Among other things, Sid Vicious was known for his provocative fashion that occasionally included symbols like the swastika that he wore to be “provocative, not expressing any affiliation with the ideology of the Nazis, and trying to get up the noses of their parents,” according to BBC.
We know that this sign is absolutely incorrect.
However, it is still necessary to explain this matter.Sid Vicious,He’s an anarchist, icon of Punk.
Perhaps the image of this person was the wrong choice, but it was definitely not meant to support the Nazis.

Now, wearing hate symbols for shock value is still shit in my book, but especially considering the context of the day, there is a difference between being an edgy dick and being an advocate for racist genocide.
Also, the difference between punk and, say, 4chan trolls today is…

Despite the fact that the shirt isn’t associated with a history of promoting Nazism, many netizens feel uncomfortable that the shirt includes a swastika at all. Arguing that wearing the shirt is inexcusable.
“It’s just Sid Vicious merch!” a) Sid Vicious isn’t someone you should get on a shirt considering he murdered his girlfriend, and b) if Chaeyoung really wanted to wear punk merch she could’ve chosen one without Nazi symbols https://t.co/4K0TyncbOE

Chaeyoung fans trying to defend her by saying its just Sid Vicious merch and that he used to wear nazi paraphernalia to shock people as if that’ll somehow make it any better for her. Sid also stabbed his girlfriend to death. He is not somebody you want on your shirt. https://t.co/UkBWZA6dSV

Chaeyoung has a shirt with Sid viscious on with a swastika and like its probably a vintage punk shirt but it’s still fucked up to have the swastika on it IMO it’s just tasteless cause there’s no reason to have it
— manic mingki (@mngi_i) March 21, 2023
there is literally no defending her atp… “punk activist band shirt” or whatever the hell you’re all saying is NO EXCUSE. it is a well known HATE SYMBOL and to see her so casually walking around in it is extremely disheartening.

Other netizens have suggested that Chaeyoung would likely be more familiar with the swastika as a Buddhist symbol.
In the Buddhist tradition, the swastika symbolizes the feet, or the footprints, of the Buddha. It is often placed at the beginning and end of inscriptions, and modern Tibetan Buddhists use it as a clothing decoration. With the spread of Buddhism, the swastika passed into the iconography of China and Japan, where it has been used to denote plurality, abundance, prosperity, and long life.

But regardless, netizens are especially shocked that the two recent issues with Chaeyoung’s styling happened within such a short time frame.
wait you telling me chaeyoung wore the swastika and a qanon shirt while IN THE US???
— ness (@rizzlapis) March 21, 2023
in 1 week they got chaeyoung wearing a qanon shirt and a shirt with a swastika on it. wtf
— blacklight (@bllackllight) March 21, 2023

And others are pointing out that Chaeyoung has been spotted wearing this shirt in the past, with some netizens wondering if she owns it.
we shouldn’t blame the stylist for this, she OWNS that shirt. we must educate chaeyoung about this issue..
— glamrock chaeyoung (@toptierson) March 21, 2023
reminder that, yes, the shirt chaeyoung wore ON STAGE probably was not her choice. BUT the white shirt she has worn BEFORE and OWNS IT. there’s no defending that in my opinion and i can’t wait to hear what bullshit onces will come up with to try and defend it.
